Regardless of what
a person presents to the world, they have a secret life………..
mind, muscle and
memory,
grounded in emotions,
bodily relationship
to the world and
individual landscapes of experience.
There is a private
unarticulated dialogue which takes place between an individual and a work of
art.
The work is meant
to free, enhance and amplify the perception of art and the world around.
abstract organic shapes tap
into a primordial memory. The viewer can feel but not necessarily recognize
what is in front of them.
Through this
language a release of associated memories occurs allowing the viewer the
freedom to let their subconscious take over.
My paintings are colorful
dynamic landscapes of the imagination.
Art historically
my work is influenced by the freedom of abstract expressionists of the 1950’s, the”
landscapes of the mind” of the Surrealists,
the “simple materials” philosophy of the Art Brut and Art Povera
movements, the expressive figuration mixed with design elements of Francis
Bacon and the expansive, textural landscapes of Anslem
Kiefer.
Materials linked
to our everyday reality trigger memories.
I begin my compositions with newspaper collaging,
I then pour colored stains on the canvas, physically manipulating it so the paint falls
unpredictably. After this I start
layering the paint using sand for texture, varying tonal ranges for atmosphere,
varied and intersecting planes to create space and depth.
It’s a constant
balancing act between control and release, chaos and order.
